The British Bouldering
Championships
 |
Bouldering is…
many things to many people.
For some, it’s the ultimate expression of climbing. No ropes,
no gear - just the joy of pure movement, in relative safety, not
too high above the ground.
For some, it’s a never-ending quest for technical perfection.
The hardest moves will nearly always be on boulders.
For some, it’s the proven method to gain power, suppleness
and technique.
This event will see around 200 of Britain's top boulderers battle
it out to decide the national champions for 2007; seniors on Saturday,
juniors on Sunday.

At Cliffhanger this record will be challenged once again, back
in the city in which it was first set, this time outdoors.

the event, with a world record attempt and £1,000 of prize
money up for grabs on the Sunday afternoon.

Iron
Smelting - Free
 |
Staff and students from the Dept of Archaeology (University of
Sheffield) will be dealing with their own kinds of ‘Hot
Rocks’ when they attempt to reconstruct the ancient craft
of iron smelting. Using locally available resources and knowledge
revealed from archaeological excavations the team will demonstrate
the ancient art of converting stones into swords! Whether they
succeed or fail will depend on the good will of the furnace Gods
and the assistance of the public to help out pumping bellows,
charging ore, and preparing charcoal. Success is not guaranteed
but if it is then it will be the first time that bloomery iron
will have been smelted in Sheffield for about half a millennium;
all in all it has the makings of a real cliff hanger!
