Tens of thousands set to enjoy Sheffield’s Peak District festival
What's thought to be the UK's largest outdoor event for outdoor people, taking place this Saturday and Sunday, July 14 and 15, not only features a host of family activities, exhibitions, demonstrations and challenges, but is also set to enjoy "the only day of Summer this year" according to weather forecasters - ensuring the heat will well and truly be on.
"The wait is over," stated co-organiser Matt Heason. "Cliffhanger aims to not only deliver the goods, but exceed all expectations. There's simply nothing like it on this scale anywhere else in the country - visitors are going to be blown away by the event."
Encompassing the likes of the first ever outdoor British Bouldering Championships, Come-And-Try-It Climbing Walls, an Open Air Market, Alpine Beer Festival, White Knuckle Rides and a Guinness World Record Dyno Competition, Cliffhanger is undoubtedly the only place to be this weekend.
Also in the offing is the St Lukes Music and Dance Spectacular (rescheduled from Endcliffe Park), extreme orienteering, and an iron smelting challenge - which, if successful, will be the first time bloomery iron has been smelted in Sheffield for half a millennium.
To cap it all, the Sheffield Adventure Film Festival (ShAFF) will be teaming up with the Showroom Cinema to offer visitors a film and lecture tent where they'll find a selection of the best films from ShAFF 2007, along with a number of prominent speakers from the worlds of climbing, mountaineering, caving, Parkour and photography.
"The inspiration for Cliffhanger came from the city itself. A third of Sheffield is within the boundary of the Peak District - there couldn't be a better place for it," said Kevin Cheetham, Sheffield City Council's outdoor events officer. "The fact that we're all set to enjoy glorious sunshine will simply add to what's sure to be a wonderful occasion for all the family."
Tickets for the two-day extravaganza are £5 for adults - but kids, parking and programmes, are free.
Cliffhanger is organised by Sheffield City Council Parks and Countryside Department and Woodseats-based outdoor sports event consultants, Heason Events with backing from Decathlon, Spice Yorkshire, Fat Face, Alpkit.com, University of Derby, planetFear.com, Natives.co.uk, Climb Magazine, The Star, Real Radio, Dirty Stop Outs, The British Mountaineering Council, Sports Pulse, Arnold Laver, The Climbing Works, Yorkshire Forward and ERDF.
