The organisers of Sheffield's outdoor pursuits expo, Cliffhanger, are marking the start of National Bike Week with the announcement that the city is set to witness the biggest line-up of cycling disciplines ever to be held in Steel City.

Two wheels are set to play a major part in the family event that takes place in Millhouses Park on Saturday and Sunday, July 11 and 12, and festival goers are being encouraged to turn up on their pushbikes rather than arrive in their cars, with a secure bike park being provided by organisers.

A North-Shore style balance course, recycled bikes, wonky bikes and white knuckle coaching sessions and demos in trials mountain biking from ex-world champion Ben Slinger and ex-European Champion Danny Butler are some of the attractions being lined up for the celebrated event.

Trailquest - the art of orienteering on mountain bikes - also makes its debut at Cliffhanger. Organised by Dark & White events and taking place on Saturday (July 11) only, the two-hour discipline will leave Millhouses Park and travel through the nearby Peak District. Entry to Cliffhanger qualifies competitors for free entry into the race but cyclists will need to join the Trail Cyclist Association to take part. A roadworthy bike, cycle helmet, watch, the event map (supplied), a first aid kit, 2 x £1 for phone and substantial clothing, including quality waterproofs, are compulsory kit for this events. Cliffhanger is one of the UK's largest outdoor-pursuits festivals, based in one of Sheffield's biggest green spaces. It is the brainchild of Sheffield City Council's Parks & Countryside Department and has been developed to its current level with support from Heason Events.

The event also features competitions and demonstrations in rock climbing, orienteering, kayaking, mountain biking, running, skiing & snowboarding, skateboarding, free running, adventure racing and more.

The activities are aimed at people of all ages. New attractions for this year include urban fell race, adventure race, bowling, archery, rollerskiing, skateboarding demonstrations and bouldering coaching.

There will also be scuba diving, angling, kite flying, assault courses, caving, a massive bargain area, music, plenty of children's rides and other activities, food stalls, a market and much, much more.

National Bike Week starts this Saturday, June 13, and runs until next Sunday, June 21.
